Remember the offer for free genotypings? Well I got an email from them that I thought I'd share with you.

This night the deadline for free genotypings passed, and we are overwhelmed by the amount of responses. In less than 24 hours after the first blog post over 200 people sent us their applications, and in total over 450 people applied. For us the real work now begins, and we will do our best to go through all the applications, select the most interesting, and then contact every applicant.

Entering Phenotypes
We also used the past weeks to implement some more features into openSNP. This time we focused on end-users entering their data into openSNP, especially on entering phenotypic variations.

Autosomal - who is related?

I recently received an email that got me wondering if you might not understand the relationships that testing for Autosomal chromosomes can develop for you and how to understand them.
In this graft you see that your Great grandparents are a solid color - right? in reality the are mixed colors too, but solid is needed for the explanation. As you see, the colors mix as they get closer to you; that is basically what happens to your Autosomal chromosomes as the combine and recombine at each generation. Of course this is only a graft of ONE chromosome, you have 22 pairs that do this recombination dance. Now your chromosomes are pairs to make up the pair, you get one of the set from Dad and one from Mom, They don't recombine with each other they do the dance with themselves. So you have a clear line from Dad and a clear line from Mom, but with out some work you don't know which parent gave you what set.

The email asked " On my actual Family Finder DNA test results I have 4 matches on Chromosome
> 7, called A, B, C, and D.

> A is from 82.2m to 94.9m - 10.08cM and 3100 SNP.

> B is from 86.1m to 96.3m - 10.45cM and 2700 SNP.
>
> C is from 90.7m to 102.7m - 9.24cM and 2800 SNP.

My response was:
No it means they are all related to you.
First you need to understand that all chromosomes are PAIRS one chromosome from Dad One chromosome from Mom.they are numbered the same so unless you do some detective work you will not know which parent your cousins descend from.

Now if you had known cousins or half siblings from either parent tested and they matched you on specific sets of segment numbers then, if one or more of these unknown cousins matched them then you would know up what one of your  parents line they descend from.

but see if they match each other then if the three of you figure out what parent's line converges. you will know what parent the match comes from.

Just incase you do not know this...a negitive match DOES NOT MEAN your not related, it just means a measurable segment did not survive the combination recombination to either of the two persons comparing.

It's my birthday.


 Hi,
Today is my 67th birthday. I have decided to talk to you about my genealogy file and genetics. I tested at 23andme.com for both the medical and the ancestry projects. I have well over 600 matches that are cousins of some level or another. But, most people have trouble figuring out how we all are related. You see most people only research their own lineage leaving the siblings of each generation out of their research. With Autosomal Chromosome testing (atDNA) you are looking at anyone they share common ancestors with. I am using a code to show how each person in my files are related to me. I use an abbreviation for the surname that is my bloodline and a dash (-) and number, with no letter for direct blood line male, abbreviation,number,  dash and letter a for females of my blood line and abbreviation , dash, number  and letter b for spouses of bloodlines.

So John T. Hurst would be John T. (Hrst-1) his wife would be Fran (Hrst-1b) Goodheart.

Jane (Hrst-1a) Hurst Jane's husband would be Tom (Hrst-1b)Blake, but their children would be
Samuel (Hrst-1a) Blake
Linda (Hrst-1a) Blake

Each generation from the female Hurst will carry the (Hrst-1a) designator to show that even though the surname has changed the genetics of the Hursts are carried in her children grandchildren and all  descendants.

The only problem with atDNA testing is that your segment from your ancestor may be to small to be accurately identified by testing. The average segment after 5 generations seems to be to small to use as it might also just be a shared segment that thousands of others share by commonality and not really by descent.

That is hard to explain. I'm hoping my numbering system will help us find out how or from whom we share genetic segments.

The North of England Study

The North of England Study

Background to the study

This Leverhulme Trust/Wellcome Trust-funded study is being carried out by Dr Turi King in collaboration with Professor Mark Jobling at the University of Leicester as part of the Impact of Diasporas on the Making of Britain project. Surnames are passed down from fathers to sons, and in Britain, this has been going on since heritable surnames were first established some 700 years ago. We have studied the link between DNA and surnames, focusing on the Y chromosome, part of our DNA that is, like the surname, passed down the paternal line.
In this project we want to learn about British history by studying the Y chromosomes of men with old local surnames, to provide us with a link to the DNA of people in the past. We are particularly interested in the history of the Vikings. We know that these people left a lasting legacy on our language, landscape and place-names. But did they leave any genetic trace in today's population?
To answer this question, we wish to obtain DNA samples from men with old local surnames from the north of England. Men carrying such names are very likely to have inherited them from ancestors who lived in the area only a few generations after the Vikings settled in the region.
We have nearly completed recruitment for this study, but still require participants bearing one of the eligible surnames listed below. DNA donation is simply via a saliva sample, and volunteers will receive a description of their own Y-chromosome type when the work is completed in 2013.
If you are a man carrying one of these surnames, your father's father was born in the north of England (Cheshire, Cumbria, Lancashire, Yorkshire, Durham or Northumberland) and you would like to take part in the study, please read on below.

How to take part in the study

Men interested in taking part are asked to register to attend one of the recruitment events listed below. Here participants (and anyone interested in the study) will be able to come along, listen to a talk, ask questions about the project and give a DNA sample on the day.

As representatives for each surname come forward, we will continue to list the remaining surnames for which we do not yet have participants on the drop-down list on the registration page. What does taking part involve?

Aside from the talk, participating will take around 10 minutes of your time and enable you to find out more about your ancestry and the history of the Britain. We ask that you fill out a questionnaire about your ancestry, sign a consent form, and donate a saliva sample that provides us with the DNA that we need.Participants will be provided with a summary of the results, designed for a layperson, at the end of the study in 2013. In addition we will provide a copy of each participant's Y chromosome genetic fingerprint and an explanation sheet designed for the layperson.
During this project we are looking at normal variation only, and no targeted tests of any medical consequence are done. However, while analyzing Y-chromosomal variation it can be found, in very rare cases, that a man has lost part of his Y chromosome which is related to fertility. Therefore, if potential participants are concerned about the risks of detecting infertility, we would suggest that they do not take part.
